Brogan Joe Murphy began his life-long study of painting in 1978 with David Hardy at the Atelier of Classical Realism in Oakland, California. Teaching with methods and materials of the old masters, Hardy schooled Murphy in landscape, still life and portraiture, as well as composition, perspective, and the preparation of pigments and mediums.
Over the years, Murphy has participated in successful group and solo exhibitions in Boston, New York, Washington, DC, Minneapolis, Tulsa, Sacramento and San Francisco. His works can be found in numerous public and private collections including the White House, and the Maryland State House.
An avid runner, in 1993 Murphy was training for his third marathon when he suffered a serious back injury. The treatment for his back ultimately required two spinal fusions. In 2012, during his second fusion, a mishap left Murphy a paraplegic. His paralysis and long recovery resulted in an extended hiatus from painting. Eventually, Murphy discovered new methods and materials to facilitate painting from a wheelchair. Now, he’s back in his studio again...
